WOMEN IN MINISTRY LEADERSHIP: SEEKING A GOD- CENTERED UNDERSTANDING

Can women serve as ministry leaders in the church?

The Bible teaches that all believers are equal before God. The Scripture consistently affirms the equal value, dignity, and worth of both men and women in Christ. The prophet Joel declared that God would pour out His Spirit on all people, and that both sons and daughters would prophesy. This promise continues in the New Testament, where the Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to believers regardless of gender. Galatians 3:28 reminds us that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female for all are one in Him. Throughout the Bible, we see women actively involved in God’s work:

  • Phoebe served as a deaconess, helping support church leadership and ministry.

  • Anna was a prophetess who worshiped, fasted, and proclaimed God’s message in the temple.

  • Priscilla, together with her husband Aquila, helped teach Apollos and strengthen his understanding of the gospel.

The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts as He chooses, and women as well as men may be gifted in teaching, leadership, encouragement, and service. In this understanding, God calls everyone to help share the gospel and support the growth of the church.

While affirming spiritual equality, UCLE also recognizes that Scripture teaches order and structure within the church and family.

  • Spiritually, men and women are equally gifted, called, and empowered by God.

  • Practically, the church seeks to maintain biblical order and cooperation within leadership structures.

This means women play important leadership roles throughout ministry life such as teaching children and youth, leading ministries, serving as deacons, discipling others, evangelizing, and using spiritual gifts that strengthen the church. The Bible does not present ministry as a competition between men and women. Instead, it shows men and women working together to accomplish God’s mission.
